It is useful to understand what generic capabilities are provided by various document management systems and workflow systems to begin the process of vendor selection and determine what capabilities will need be augmented by additional programming.

If we reflect on the history of other information technologies, we see that there were periods when organizations would often write their major subsystems from scratch. For example, telecommunications/transaction managers, database management systems, and email systems.

Now most organizations build upon the facilities of commercial products using system interfaces and APIs. For example, database systems using SQL and Email systems using various API families. Document management and workflow systems are not yet as standardized as these two examples, but there are substantial business benefits to starting with one of the commercial products, and adding specific enhancements as necessary.

Document Management Perspectives An overview presentation of the services and features of commercial document management systems.
Workflow System Perspectives An introduction to workflow system technology.
